Tom Evans is one of the true innovators in audio design. Many of you know him from his world class phono stages which I have used for years. Currently the 20th Anniversary Groove MKII and the Backert Xphono 1.1 are working their magic in my systems. Silent, dynamic, sweet. full, rich and extremely revealing describe Tom.s unique designs.
One of the biggest surprises that I have been playing with for the last 5 years has been the amazing Linear A and Linear B amplifiers which have just been updated in the second half of 2021. Both designs now have adjustable feedback and can now reduce feedback to zero. That along with the necessary design changes have lifted these world class designs up to an entirely new level. It’s like they do the best of both single ended triodes and push/pull tube amplifiers along with the silence, control, and bass response of solid state amps. They are just 25 and 55 wpm designs but it is surprising what they will drive. With Vaughn speakers they are like monster muscle amps with the sole of top flight single ended triode amplifier. It takes 2-4 months to get one so I try to keep a Linear A in stock but if not they are definitely worth the wait and a perfect match with the Backert pre amplifiers or of course Tom’s Vibe Phoenix preamplifier.
Read the older reviews of the Linear A and just imagine the new MK3 versions are another world better and you will understand just how special these amplifiers are.
